San Joaquin Valley Agriculture
By some estimates, 25% of the United States’ agricultural production (in dollar value) comes from California, and the vast majority of that is in the San Joaquin Valley. Five of its counties-Fresno, Kern, Tulare, Merced, and Stanislaus-rank among the state’s top 10 counties in farm production value. The San Joaquin Valley has often been referred to as the “nation’s salad bowl” for the amazing array of fruits and vegetables grown in its fertile soil. Grapes-table, raisin, and wine-are perhaps the Valley’s signature cash crop.
Additional San Joaquin Valley Products. The Boswell Farm in Kings County is the largest single cotton farm in the world, occupying more than 40,000 acres. In addition, the Valley is known for its prolific production of nuts, especially almonds and pistachios. Interestingly, certain places are identified quite strongly with a given crop. For example, Stockton produces the majority of the asparagus consumed in the United States while Fresno is credited as the birthplace of the raisin.

San Joaquin Valley Ranching. Cattle and sheep ranching are also vital to the San Joaquin Valley’s economy. During recent years, dairy farming has greatly expanded in importance. As areas such as Chino and Corona have become absorbed into the suburban sprawl of Los Angeles, many dairy farmers have cashed out and moved their herds to Kings, Tulare, and Kern counties.
